MUTCD
Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The MUTCD contains standards for traffic control devices that regulate, warn, and guide road users along the highways and byways in all 50 States. Traffic control devices are important because they optimize traffic performance, promote uniformity nationwide, and help improve safety by reducing the number and severity of traffic crashes.

Virginia Work Area Protection Manual

This Manual is Virginia’s version of Part 6 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) 2003 edition and either meets or exceeds the requirements for temporary traffic control established by the Federal Highway Administration.

NCHRP 350 Report
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is requiring all states to have all traffic control devices in a work zone be crashworthy and to qualify as such according to the testing and acceptance guidelines of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350.
